Donations - Turntable Project

~~The Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust has acquired the 60' turntable from Hitchin on the East Coast Mainline for use at Dereham where it will become part of the planned new museum and heritage centre at Dereham. The total cost of the project to remove, transport, refurbish and install the turntable at Dereham will undoubtedly be very expensive. The turntable had been out of use since 1975 and has been in open storage since it was saved by the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in 1978.

The table was built by Ipswich based firm Ransoms & Rapier in 1933. Although larger locomotives such as A4s & Larger Pacifics will not be able to use the turnable, the turntable will be able to turn everything that is presently based on the Mid-Norfolk Railway. A small group visited the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton in July 2014 to view the turntable and make an offer to the centre. The group were impressed with the condition of the turntable, despite being out in the open for such a long time. A later revised offer was accepted by the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, and the turntable acquired. The project is being led by Dennis B. Howells MBE, with the full support of the Board of Directors and will involve an Appeal to help with Storage, Restoration and Transport Costs.
